Best Non High Efficiency (HE) Washing Machine, Speed Queen!

The Conflict – My Old High Efficiency Washing Machine

When I purchased my house I purchased a high efficiency washing machine from one at the local big box stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Sears, etc) in the middle of the price range.  It was a pretty basic 4.1 cuft capacity high efficiency machine with a variety of settings for different amounts of soiling, water temperatures, and I could even select the water level (or so I thought). Since that time I always set the water level to the largest setting and it always filled about half way.  Over the past seven years I’ve attempted to compensate for the low water level by pouring water in the drum, using less soap, and only running half a load in an attempt to get everything under or near the water line.  I never felt that my clothes were getting clean, but had no other alternatives due to government regulations.  Plus the high efficiency washing machine ran much longer than the older washers (an hour and ten minutes).  I found that laundry took all day and I had to set alarms / reminders or I’d forget about laundry altogether.

The straw that finally “broke the camels back” was when my girlfriends dog got sick on the bed and the comforter did not get clean after 4 attempts through the washing machine.  I went on one of my frequent rants bashing my high efficiency washing machine and Department of Energy for instituting these regulations while sprinkling in a few colorful 4 letter words.  I had visions of my ensuing mid life crisis, only mine did not include a fancy red sports car.  My vision included several rows of expensive laundromat quality washing machines lined up in my basement as I was certain I could only purchase them at some minimum quantity.  I also had visions of starting a washing machine company.  How difficult could it be to strap a motor, controls, and a few actuators to a 50 gallon drum to do a load of laundry.  Heck I could do a better load of laundry than my high efficiency washing machine using only a kiddy pool, garden hose, and a sturdy stick.

Before I reserved myself to beating my clothes against a rock down by the river, I decided to give my search for a solution one more try.  I scoured the big box stores web sites and there were a few rays of hope, but nothing panned out.  One machine was not listed as high efficiency, had some control over the water level, and it had great review. However, I found that it was truly a high efficiency machine after downloading the manual and finding that it clearly showed how to properly load the machine with the clothes above the water line.  I quickly found that the big box stores only market settings and features that the have some resemblance of control, but don’t include information that would allow me to make a truly informed decision (i.e. water usage and duration of the wash).  I found the solution to my laundering troubles buried in the comments of a review of this high efficiency washing machine… Speed Queen.

The Solution – Speed Queen Top Loader Washing Machine

Speed Queen!… I want to shout it from the rooftops!

Speed Queen Side Steps Restrictive Government Regulation

The Speed Queen washing machines have successfully side stepped government regulation using good old fashioned american ingenuity.  The Speed Queen washing machine’s “Normal / Eco” wash setting satisfies the Department of Energy’s government regulations and technically qualifies it as a High Efficiency washing machine; however, all other preset cycle settings on their washing machines Fills the Entire Tub with Water.  The “Normal / Eco” cycle setting uses less hot water to save energy and includes a spray rinse to reduce water consumption. There are 9 other preset cycle settings on their high end electronic model and 5 on their base model (that fills the entire tub).  There is No Lid Lock that prevents you from opening the lid at any time to stop the cycle and verify the claims of a full tub of water.  The Speed Queen top loader washer manual does recommend the use of HE soap; however, I suspect that this is only in support of the “Normal / Eco” setting.

My First Load of Laundry in the Speed Queen

This s a picture of my king size comforter during the wash cycle in the Speed Queen top load washer (3.3 cu ft capacity).  This picture was taken after my girlfriends dog had gotten sick on it (mentioned previously) and 4 attempts to clean it in my old high efficiency washer. There was some room in the tub to spare for clothes and the water level couldn’t get any higher. There was clearly some excess soap in it, but I’m not sure whether that was due to the prior 4 frustrating attempts to get it clean or was built up over time.  The comforter was clean after the first attempt in the Speed Queen and the excessive soap was removed with a second rinse.  Probably could have gone through a 3rd rinse (which is an option on the high end model), but I didn’t feel that the was necessary.  I can’t believe the ridiculous rituals I performed while trying to do laundry with the high efficiency machine.  The Speed Queen just works!

The only less than optimal thing I’ve read and experienced is that the water stops when the lid is open, but I suspect this is a safety precaution and is only a minor inconvenience.

Speed Queen Preset Cycle Settings / Display / Duration

Using the Speed Queen felt like my life was on fast forward.  The Total Wash Time Ranges Between 27:55 Minutes and 32:55 Minutes vs over an hour in my old high efficiency washer.   The time savings alone makes the Speed Queen washer a sound investment.  The wash cycle options range between 12:45 and 17:45 minutes depending on whether you use the quick wash (12:45), perm press (13:45), heavy duty (15:45), whites (17:45), or bulky (17:45) settings. The rinse takes another 10:10 minutes, and the final spin takes 5 minutes.   You may also choose to add an additional soak (37:00), pre-wash (13:10), second rinse (10:10), and third rinse (20:20) to your wash cycle at your discretion. The Time Remaining Display eliminates guesswork by clearly showing when the laundry will be finished.

The picture is of the high end speed queen top load washer controls.  The base model includes 6 of the 10 presets cycles, 3 of the 4 temperature / load size / soil level selections, and 3 of the 6 options of the high end model as defined in the following table.

Speed Queen Washer Installation

The installation of the machine was no different than the standard washing machine.  Just a hot and cold water supply, a drain hose, and a plug that uses the standard 15 Amp wall outlet in your home.  I installed it myself using Speed Queens instructions without incident or concern.

The Speed Queen is noticeably heavier (195 lbs) than my prior high efficiency washer.  As a result, there was virtually no motion of the machine and very little noise during the spin cycle even though I neglected to level the machine during the initial installation. Whoops! I also noticed that when I attempted to pull the agitator to the side the machine dampened the motion significantly as opposed to flopping over like it did in my old high efficiency machine. I think the dampening of the drum compensated for my oversight to level the machine.  The Speed Queen also includes an automatic balancing system with self leveling rear legs.

The overall dimensions of the washer are standard:

  • 25 5/8 inch width
  • 28 inch depth
  • 36 inch work surface height
  • 43 inch overall height (including controls)

Speed Queen Quality, Reliability, and Warranty

The Speed Queen top load washing machines are built for commercial grade performance.  Since 1908, Speed Queen headquartered in Ripon, Wisconsin has provided commercial machines commonly found in laundromats, hospitals, fire stations, hotels, and military bases for more than a century.  Speed Queen’s washers intended for home use are built on the same production line and use the same components as their commercial products.  Speed Queen equipment is tested to last 10,400 cycles or 25 years in the average home.  This is largely due to their generous use of metal components.  In fact, it seems the only difference between their commercial products and the home use products is their generous warranty offer for their home use products.  The electronic models for home use comes with a 5-year warranty covering all parts and in-home labor, a 15-year limited warranty covering the transmission, and a lifetime warranty of the outer drain tub and stainless steel wash basket.

Where to Purchase Speed Queen

The Speed Queen top load washing machines are not available through your local big box stores (Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Sears, etc).

At the time of this article, the high end Speed Queen top loader washing machine, AWNE92SP113TW01, was available for $999 and the base model, AWNE82SP113TW01, was available for $899.  I verified these prices through two of the 2,700+ authorized dealers listed on SpeedQueen.com.  Initially, I thought these prices seemed high until i compared the price to the 51 top loader washers listed on Lowes.com.  Of the 51 top load washers listed on Lowes.com, 11 (or ~21%) were available for no less than $1,000 and none of them appeared to fill the entire tub with water.

In addition to the dealers listed on SpeedQueen.com, you may want to consider searching for deals on Amazon.

Are You Compensated Like the Top 1% of Engineers?

Neither am I…

Each year I see reports on the highest paying entry level jobs and engineering disciplines are always near the top of the list.  Early in my career I watched my salary grow significantly;  however, now as an 18+ year veteran in the engineering field I’ve noticed that in the past 5 or 6 years my increases have tended to stagnate at or even below the cost of living.  For several years now I have considered market fluctuations and political environments as potential causes for this apparent leveling off of my compensation.  Over time this led me to wonder whether I had simply reached my peak for my particular profession and what the absolute maximum compensation was for top performers in my field might be.

To gain additional insight I consulted Salary.com‘s free salary reports. Salary.com uses employer-reported data comprised of 29 million individuals working at 16,000 companies adjusted for cost of living by zip code.  The distribution of salaries is provided for various job titles for individuals with varying years of experience.

So I set off to determine what the absolute maximum salary might be for the various engineering disciplines.

Salary of Engineering Professionals with the Most Experience

The following table shows the salary distribution of Engineering professionals with the most experience.  The 50, 75, and 90 percentile salaries are extracted from Salary.com‘s free salary reports for those individuals with greater than 8 years experience nationwide.  The 99, 99.9, and 99.99 percentile salaries are interpolated from the data using curve fitting techniques (more on the methodology later) to provide the salary for the top 1% (1 in 100), 0.1% (1 in 1,000), and 0.01% (1 in 10,000). These last three data points provide a theoretical upper bound on the potential salaries of the various engineering disciplines.  Although these salary results are numerically sound (in my humble opinion), these outlying salaries may or may not be achievable.

Do Olympians Have Olympic Sized Libidos?

Olympic_Condoms_Sex
More than 11,00 athletes from 206 nations are competing in the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio (and 5 nearby cities) between 8/3 & 8/16.  The Olympic committee only provided 450,000 condoms for the 11,000+ athletes. This equates to roughly 41 condoms per athlete over the 18 day event. These poor athletes will only be able to have safe sex 2.3 times per day, unless they resort to sleeping with other Olympic athletes. Even so, they would still only be able to have protected sex 4.6 times per day, while supplies last.

I would have thought that Olympic athletes would have Olympic sized libidos, but apparently I was wrong.

BatchGeo Map Location Marker Tag Information Extraction

BatchGeo Map with Many Location Tags
I recently stumbled across a map embedded on a website that contained the contact information of several consultants across the United States and I wanted this extract this information into a tabular form.
I reviewed the site’s HTML and discovered that the embedded map was produced using BatchGeo.   BatchGeo allows anyone to quickly and easily upload an Excel list of locations to create a Google map with each location tagged.  Each location tag may contain additional information such as name, address, phone number, email address, URL,  etc.
An example map produced by BatchGeo can be seen below.
Map
All of the information I was looking for was available within the location tags;  however copying and pasting each one would be tedious and time consuming.
BatchGeo uses KML (Keyhole Markup Language) to display geographic data within Google Maps.  KML is a structured XML (EXtensible Markup Language) based format that is both human and machine readable.  I just needed to find a way to access to it directly.
The KML file can be download from any BatchGeo map by prepending “/kml” into the map URL.  The KML file for the prior map may be downloaded below.

The KML file is human and machine readable, but its not very well structured for the human and I wanted the information in Excel.

The KML files can be opened and viewed using excels XML schema.  The file is not automatically opened by Excel when you double click on it; however, you can open the file from within Excel. Once you have Excel open, click on open file in the home tab,  select all file types, and open the KML file.  Excel converts the file for viewing.  You may then sort, filter, process, and save the data as you see fit.

Microsoft Outlook Rule to Archive Meeting Request Responses

I’ve been scheduling (and rescheduling) a lot of meetings in Microsoft Outlook lately and I’ve grown tired of continually moving everyone’s responses to the meeting request (Accepted, Rejected, Tentative) from my inbox.  I’ve also found that if I’m too diligent with removing those response, I miss something important someone added to the body of the their response. Instead of continuing to sort through these responses manually, I chose to set up a Microsoft Outlook rule to do the heavy lifting for me. The rule sorts through all my incoming messages as they arrive and looks for tell tale signatures of a meeting request response.  Specifically, it looks for whether my name is on the “To” line, it was sent only to me, and it has “Accepted”, “Declined”, or “Tentative” in the subject line.  When the rule finds a message that matches those criteria and has nothing written in the body of the message, it immediately moves it out of my inbox to an Archive folder.

How to Set Up the Microsoft Outlook Rule (for those familiar with the process)

For those of you familiar with Rules in Outlook, the rule I created is as follows.  You will note that the rule only looks for vowels in the body as an exception to the rule.  As I have yet to receive any important emails containing all consonants as a response, this works like a dream.

Why I Dropped the Verizon Smartphone Total Mobile Protection Plan

I recently received a update to my Verizon Smartphone Total Mobile Protection Plan that made me re-evaluate whether it is worth it. The plan has become more expensive (from $10 to $11 / month) and the deductible was raised (from $99 to $149).

Verizon Smartphone Total Mobile Protection Plan Update Letter

Asurion Verizon Smartphone Total Mobile Protection Plan Letter FrontAsurion Verizon Smartphone Total Mobile Protection Plan Letter Back

Almost two years ago, I opted into the Verizon Smartphone Total Mobile Protection Plan when I upgraded from a flip phone to a smart phone.  In my haste the $10 / mo fee for the protection plan compared to the relatively large sticker price seemed worth it and I hadn’t revisited my decision.  Plus given my active lifestyle (time spent near the ocean, snowboarding, biking, etc), I figured it might be a good investment.  Over the last two years I’ve paid $240 for that protection plan and still have a fully functional phone.

I found that I could purchase a used Droid Maxx for $99 on Amazon or a new one for $200.  Following this realization, I immediately cancelled my protection plan.  I figured that the $11 per month protection plan with a $149 deductible wasn’t beneficial for a phone that could be replaced for between $99 and $200.

This got me wondering whether I’d make the same decision today. Verizon offers the Droid Maxx 2 for $99 with a 2 year contract or a flat fee of $348.  If I were signing up today, then I might choose to pay the $99 for the phone with a 2 year contract, but I would opt out of the protection plan.  Given a $348 sticker price and a $149 deductible it costs $11 / month to cover $199 (= $348 sticker – $149 deductible).  At a rate of $11 / month I could cover the $199 myself within 18 months.  Furthermore, a $348 phone offered today will be offered for something less tomorrow and the protection plan is not obligated to replace the phone with a new one.  Odds are it will be a refurbished one (i.e. used). Given the fact that I’m on my second phone in 10 years this seems to be an acceptable risk. The potential benefit vs. the cost just isn’t there for me.

It pays to revisit your contracts.  In addition to reducing my monthly bill by $10 by removing the Verizon Smartphone Total Mobile Protection Plan, I discovered that verizon had revised their data plan costs and I could double my monthly data from 1GB to 2GB and save $9 per month.  I also received an additional 3% reduction by switching to paperless billing.  In all, I was able to reduce my monthly bill by over $20 / month while double my monthly data.

Remove a Picture’s Background in PowerPoint

At some point you may want to remove a picture’s background in order to isolate or accent the subject, remove distracting details, or have some fun and place yourself in fun or amusing locations.  For example, below is a picture taken during one of my many speeches at the White House in DC.
Mike Strejcek Removed Picture Background Replaced with White House Podium
The following steps are used to remove the background from an image.
  1. Select an image you’d like to remove the background from.
  2. Insert the image into a PowerPoint chart.
  3. Click on the image and the Picture Tools menu will appear in PowerPoint (image below).
  4. PowerPoint Picture Tools - remove a picture's background
  5. Under Picture Tools menu, on the Format tab, in the Adjust group, click Remove Background (at the far left of the image above) and the Background Removal tab will appear (image below).
  6. PowerPointBackgroundRemovalTab
  7. You may then click Mark Areas to Keep and Mark Areas to Remove on the Background Removal tab and select areas of the picture you’d like to keep and remove.
  8. Once you are satisfied with your background removals / additions you may click Keep Changes. Alternatively, if you are not satisfied, you may Discard All Changes.

Create a Microsoft Windows Keyboard Shortcut to Any File or Application

Microsoft Windows Keyboard Shortcut Properties

A Microsoft Windows keyboard shortcut is extremely useful if you’d like to quickly open applications,  open files, or run scripts you use frequently.

The following steps are used to set up a Microsoft Windows keyboard shortcuts.

  1. Right click on the file (or application) and left click “copy”
  2. Right click in a directory and left click “Past Shortcut”
  3. Right click on the shortcut you just created and left click “Properties”
  4. Select the “Shortcut” tab by left clicking on it.
  5. Select the “Shortcut Key” field by left clicking in the text box
  6. While in the “Shortcut Key” field type the shortcut key sequence you desire. (In the graphic, I entered the CTRL+SHIFT+T shortcut key sequence by holding down the CTRL, SHIFT, and T key. You may also choose ALT, WIN, or other key combinations as well.)
  7. Left click “OK” to apply the changes and exit the properties window
  8. From now on,  when you type that “Shortcut Key” sequence the shortcut will be executed.

Please note that many applications have assigned shortcut keys by default.  Your newly assigned Microsoft Windows keyboard shortcut may not work if used within a program that has the same keyboard shortcut assigned.

You may also want to consider saving all your Microsoft Windows keyboard shortcuts with quick keys assigned in the same directory. Otherwise they may be hard to track down later.

Liars Dice Bidding Probability Calculation

Liars Dice is a game for two or more players.  During a hand, each player rolls a set of die (typically starting the game with 5 die per player) under a cup to shield their hand from the other players.  Each player then progressively makes ever increasing bids as to the number of die of a certain face value that are contained in everyone’s collective hands.  The bid is based on what each player can see in their hand and the number of concealed die in the other players hand.  The hand starts with one player bidding on the number of die displaying a particular face value ( i.e. there is one die displaying a face value of 3,  or there is 1 – 3).   The next player must either raise the bids quantity or face value higher (i.e. there is 1 – 4, 2 – 3’s, etc) or challenge the prior bid by calling the other player a liar.  Once a player is called a liar, everyone’s hand is revealed and the bid is evaluated.  If the bid is higher than the number of die of the particular face value, then the bidder loses and must remove a die from his or her hand. However, if the number of die of a particular face value exceeds that of the bid, then the challenger loses and must remove a die from his or her hand.  This process repeats until there is only one person with die in their hand and this person is declared the winner.

The challenging portion of this game is determining what to raise the bid to and when to challenge another player’s bid.  For each die there is a 1 in 6 chance that a particular face value will be rolled;  however, the number of die with a particular face value is difficult to estimate even with the knowledge of the face values of the die in your own hand.  Plus as the game progresses, the number of die in circulation is progressively decreased changing the odds.  It is much more likely that there are at least 2 – 6’s when there is 20 die in circulation than when there are only 2 die in circulation.  It is also much more likely that there are at least 2 – 6’s than 20 – 6’s when there is 20 die in circulation.

Applying Excel’s BINOMDIST() Function

Excel’s BINOMDIST(x, n, p, cumulative) function returns the probability of “x” or fewer successes in “n” independent trials given a probability of success of “p”, when “cumulative” is true.  This function can be modified as follows such that it returns the probability of “x” or more successes in “n” independent trials given a probability of success of “p” when cumulative is true.  Using this equation, one may calculate the probability of “x” or more die being rolled with the same face value out of “n” total die rolled given the probability of a single die rolling a particular face value “p”.

P(x or more successes) = 1 - BINOMDIST(x - 1, n, p, cumulative)

Where:

x = bid for number of die with a particular face value (in addition to what's in you hand)
n = number of die in circulation (not in your hand)
p = probability of a single die rolling a particular face value
cumulative = True (Returns the CDF)

Liars Dice Bidding Probability (No Wilds)

The previous equation was used to calculate the probability that a particular bid is correct based on the number of die in circulation. The probability of a single die rolling a particular face value is 1 in 6, or 16.66%.  The resulting probabilities for varying bids and quantities of die in other players hands have been listed in the table below and color coded such that 0% chance is red, 50% chance is yellow, and 100% chance is green.

Liars Dice Bidding Probability (No Wilds)

Example Bid (How to interpret the table):

If you are playing with 3 other people (5 die per player) then there are 15 die in your opponents hands.  Based on the chart above, there is a 47% chance that 3 or more of the 15 die in your opponents hands will have a particular face value.  If you happen to be dealt 2 – 2’s, then you might bid 5 – 2’s and you would have a 47% chance of being correct.

Liars Dice Bidding Probability (Single Wild)

One popular variation of the game is to make a particular face value wild (traditionally the 1’s). The probability of a single die rolling a particular face value is 1 in 3, or 33.33% (due to the wilds). The resulting probabilities for varying bids and quantities of die in other players hands have been listed in the table below and have been color coded such that 0% chance is red, 50% chance is yellow, and 100% chance is green.

Liars Dice Bidding Probability (One Wild)

Example Bid (How to interpret the table):

If you are playing with 3 other people (5 die per player) then there are 15 die in your opponents hands.  Based on the chart above, there is a 60% chance that 5 or more of the 15 die in your opponents hands will have a particular face value.  If you happen to be dealt 2 – 2’s, then you might bid 7 – 2’s and you would have a 60% chance of being correct.

Baltimore, You’re More Likely to be Murdered Than Raped

Crime-Scene

The FBI routinely compiles crime statistics from the 260 largest cities in the United States (with a population of 100,000 or more).  By calculating the number of occurrences per capita (per 100,000 people) from those statistics one can compare and rank the probability of occurrence of the various crimes within each of  those cities. Baltimore’s crime statistics and ranking are listed below as derived from the 2015 FBI crime statistics. Generally, the highest ranking crime has been listed first; however, rape has been listed just under murder.  In reviewing Baltimore’s per capita statistics, it was noted that one is more likely to be murdered than raped in Baltimore and it seemed appropriate to display them together.

Baltimore is one of only a handful of cities where you are more likely to be murdered than raped.  Other cities include:

  • Miami, Forida
  • Miami Gardens, Florida
  • Montgomery, Alabama
  • Richmond, Virginia

It should be noted that conclusions based on any statistic should always be met with some level of skepticism.  The occurrence of this somewhat unique statistic may simply be due to crimes being under reported in those cities.

If your curious what other cities “beat out” Baltimore in the rankings for various crimes or want to see how your city measures up, the ranking of all 260 cities is included below.  You may click on the links below to jump to a specific table.
